What you need to bring for a marriage license

Proof of Identity

· Driver's license or identification card issued by this state or another state;

· United States passport;

· A current passport issued by a foreign country;

· An original or certified copy of a birth certificate issued by a Bureau of Vital Statistic for a state or a foreign government (printed within the last 10 years). Must present a valid form of government issued ID; or

· Military ID card

· Forms of identification cannot be mutilated (Ex. torn, taped together, or laminated).

Cost of Marriage License

· Currently is $81 to $85. Bring cash.

· Bring some quarters in the event there are parking meters.

· Bring a little extra cash as the fees can be increased slighting without notice

72 Hour Waiting Period

· There is a 72 hour waiting period from when you obtain the license to unless:

(a) One of the applicants is a member of the armed forces of the United States and on active duty;

(b) An applicant is not a member of the armed forces of the United States but performs work for the United States Department of Defense as a department employee or under a contract with the department;

(c) Completes a premarital education course described by Section 2.013, and who provides to the county clerk a premarital education course completion certificate indicating completion of the premarital education course not more than one year before the date the marriage license application is filed with the clerk;

 (d) An applicant obtains a written waiver from a qualified judge.

To pursue a waiver of the waiting period, phone the main Clerk's Office for the county you want to obtain the marriage license. The hours and requirements for obtaining a waiver and fees, if any, vary from day to day. Call before going for a waiver of the 72 hour waiting period.

A Marriage License Expires If Not Used Within 90 Days

Where To Obtain Your Marriage License

Marriage licenses are issued on a state basis. You must obtain the marriage license in the state you are marrying in. Any marriage license obtained in Texas is valid anywhere in Texas. It does not have to be from the Texas County you obtain the marriage license from.

Where to get married?

     You can get married anywhere. No witnesses are required. A courthouse marriage should be your absolute last choice.

Marriages that start at the Courthouse - End at the Courthouse

     Getting married at the courthouse is not fast or inexpensive. You may have to wait in a hallway for hours. The fees can cost as much as $250. It is cold and meaningless. Statistically, the chances of a courthouse wedding lasting a lifetime are next to none.

    You can marry in your apartment or home, at a park, parents or friends house, restaurant - or anywhere else. Officiants - Civil or Religious - Justice of the Peace or Minister - will come to you - anywhere - no witnesses required (or a whole group of people) - as casual or formal as you want it to be. It will likely cost you less. All it takes is one phone call.
